SUMMARY:Seven Great French Explorers (and One Translator) who Opened New Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Seven Great French Explorers (and One Translator) who Opened New Worlds \nZOOM TALK\nSaturday\, March 21\, 2026.\n1:00 PM \n  \n \n  \nJust in time for the first day of spring\, we will learn about great French explorers and one famous French translator who changed the direction of the world.  David Kamen\, a retired UN translator of French and Mandarin Chinese\, and a lifelong lover of history\, science and languages\, will present to us on a topic of great interest to him. \nAn illustrated account of seven French explorers from the “Golden Age” of French exploration in the New World\, as well as one early linguistic scholar\, Champollion\, who opened the world of ancient Egypt for our age. The consistent emphasis on practical and theoretical scientific research that characterized French endeavors in this regard contrasts (sometimes sharply) with the more openly mercenary approach taken by other European powers in their colonial expansion. \nA zoom link will be sent a few days before the presentation. \nALL MEMBERS (basic\, gold and silver) and NON MEMBERS\, AS WELL AS AF STUDENTS\nPlease RSVP below. \nGold\, silver and AF Students are free. \n

SUMMARY:Jacaranda - One Book\, One Federation
DESCRIPTION:JACARANDA\nby Gaël Faye\nPlease join us for a discussion of the One Book\, One Federation book selection.  Discussion will be led by\nVeronique Subrizi. Comme un arbre se dresse entre ténèbres et lumière\, Jacaranda célèbre l’humanité\, paradoxale\, aimante\, vivante.\nPrix Renaudot 2024\nClick here to order Jacaranda MEP Education for the special One Book One Federation price of $12.75 including free shipping.\nClick here for the pedagogical guide for Jacaranda.\nUn grand merci to Sarah Jones-Boardman of the AF de Minneapolis/St. Paul for producing the guide for 2026.\nAuteur compositeur interprète\, Gaël Faye est l’auteur du premier roman phénomène Petit pays (Grasset 2016\, prix Goncourt des lycéens) ainsi que de plusieurs albums\, de Pili pili sur un croissant au beurre (2013)\, à Mauve Jacaranda (2022). Il était la Révélation scène de l’année des Victoires de la musique 2018.\n  \nSchedule 2025 – 26: \nle 4 mars              Cabane                                         Abel Quentin\nle 9 mai                 Le Rêve du Jaguar                  Michel de Bonnefoy \n

SUMMARY:L'inconnue du portrait
\n  \nPLACE:  Atlantic Works Conference Center\nTIME:     12:30 – 1:30  (join us for lunch after conversation group at nnoon)

SUMMARY:Madagascar: Past and Present
DESCRIPTION:Madagascar: Past and Present\nAfter a brief overview of the history of human settlement in Madagascar\, this talk will focus on the past century.  During this period\, Madagascar was a colony of France\, regained its independence in 1960\, and today faces many challenges.  I will single out environmental issues\, the role of the colonial administration in shaping the current narrative\, and my long-term partnership with Malagasy colleagues and a community in the southwest to conserve the surrounding forests and wildlife while also improving local livelihoods and wellbeing. \nAlison Richard is a Senior Research Scientist in the Yale Anthropology Department and Franklin Muzzy Crosby Professor Emerita of the Human Environment\, and was Provost of Yale University from 1994-2002. She has studied the ecology and social behavior of wild primates in Africa\, Central America\, and the Himalayan foothills\, but she is most widely known for her research on lemurs in Madagascar. Her most recent book\, The Sloth Lemur’s Song: Madagascar from the Deep Past to the Uncertain Present\, is a far-reaching account of Madagascar past and present. For fifty years\, she has worked to help conserve the island’s unique natural heritage and enhance socio-economic opportunities for people living in and around forests in the southwest. \nRichard served as Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge from 2003-2010. During her tenure\, she led several major changes in University policy\, reorganized management of the University’s endowment\, expanded Cambridge’s global partnerships\, and launched and completed a transformational fund-raising campaign. For her accomplishments\, she was awarded a DBE (Dame Commander of the British Empire) for her services to Higher Education. \nRichard is a trustee of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Liz Claiborne & Art Ortenberg Foundation. She chairs the Leadership Council of the Yale Peabody Museum\, and serves on the Advisory Board of the Yale Institute for Biospheric Studies. Richard received her undergraduate degree in Anthropology at the University of Cambridge\, and her doctorate from London University. \nProgram Date:  Saturday\, December 13\, 2025\nTime: 3 PM\nAtlantic Works Conference Center\n57 Charter Oak Ave\nHartford\, CT\nALL GOLD MEMBERS AND AFH MEMBERS ARE FREE.\nPlease let us know below that you are planning to attend.

SUMMARY:Notre-Dame de Paris - Before the Fire: The Construction and History of Notre-Dame de Paris (in English)
DESCRIPTION:Part 1 of a 3 part series \n  \nNOTRE-DAME DE PARIS – Before the Fire: The Construction and History of Notre-Dame de Paris\nwith Russell Kelley\, author of The Making of Paris\n(in English)\nIn partnership with the Alliance Française Miami Metro\, the Alliance Française de Chicago\, and the Friends of Notre-Dame de Paris\nThis event begins at 10am PT / 11am MT / 12pm CT / 1pm ET and will be IN ENGLISH \nThis illustrated lecture will explore the long and eventful history of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris\, from its foundation in 1163 to the devastating fire on April 15\, 2019\, which destroyed its attic\, roof\, and iconic spire. \nThe story of Notre-Dame de Paris begins in 1163\, when Bishop Sully laid the first stone on the Île de la Cité\, at the heart of medieval Paris. One of the earliest Gothic cathedrals\, it took 182 years to complete. Over the centuries\, this architectural marvel hosted defining moments in French history\, including the coronation of a young King Henry VI of England\, the marriage of the future Henri IV and Marguerite de Valois\, and the crowning of Napoléon I as Emperor. \nAfter falling into neglect during the Revolution\, Notre-Dame was restored by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc\, who added the iconic spire that tragically burned in 2019. \n\n\n\nRussell Kelley is Vice President of the Alliance Française Miami Metro and the author of The Making of Paris: The Story of How Paris Evolved from a Fishing Village into the World’s Most Beautiful City (Lyons Press\, 2021) and Walking Through the Ages of Paris – Ten Historical Walking Tours Through the City of Light (Lyons Press\, to be published in 2026). He has lived in Paris for over 30 years – and next to Notre-Dame for the past 20 years – and attended the first mass celebrated in the rebuilt cathedral on December 8\, 2024. \nPlease register for this event at afusa.org
