SUMMARY:Cara Black's Postwar Paris
DESCRIPTION:Event begins at 1pm PT / 2pm MT / 3pm CT / 4pm ET \nJoin us for a special conversation with bestselling author Cara Black\, as she unveils her much-anticipated new novel\, Huguette. \nKnown worldwide for her beloved Aimée Leduc mystery series and acclaimed WWII thrillers\, Cara now turns to historical fiction in this powerful standalone novel set in Paris and Lyon in postwar France. Huguette introduces readers to Claude Leduc—the man whose legacy will inspire his granddaughter Aimée\, decades later\, to become an investigator. Don’t miss this chance to hear Cara Black discuss her first historical novel\, the inspirations behind it\, and the threads that connect the new work to the “Aiméeverse.” \nA suspenseful and gorgeously wrought standalone novel from the New York Times bestselling author of the Aimée Leduc Investigations\, Huguette delivers the gripping story of a young woman’s survival in the lawlessness of post–World War II France—plus\, a backstory Aimée fans won’t want to miss. \nAugust 1945: Seventeen-year-old Huguette Faure is a survivor. The war has taken everything from her—both her parents and her sense of safety. Now\, pregnant and on the lam\, she cannot return to her childhood home in Paris. Forced to reinvent herself\, she must outrun her father’s enemies\, who want her dead. After narrowly avoiding jail time—thanks to the help of a kindhearted police officer named Claude Leduc— Huguette lands a job assisting a legendary film director. As her role develops from helping him with chores to cooking his books\, she sees an opportunity to break free from the ghosts of her past once and for all. \nIn this big-hearted story of resilience\, New York Times bestselling author Cara Black offers a wholly original depiction of postwar France as well as introduces Claude Leduc—the man who decades later inspired his granddaughter\, Aimée\, to become a private investigator. \nCara Black is the author of twenty-one books in the New York Times bestselling Aimée Leduc series as well as the WWII thrillers Three Hours in Paris and Night Flight to Paris. She has won the Médaille de la Ville de Paris and the Médaille d’Or du Rayonnement Culturel de La Renaissance Française and received multiple nominations for the Anthony and Macavity Awards; her books have been translated into German\, Norwegian\, Japanese\, French\, Spanish\, Italian\, and Hebrew. \nOrder your copy of Huguette from Bookshop.org. \nPlease register at afusa.org \n  \n

SUMMARY:Notre-Dame de Paris - Before the Fire: The Construction and History of Notre-Dame de Paris (in English)
DESCRIPTION:Part 1 of a 3 part series \n  \nNOTRE-DAME DE PARIS – Before the Fire: The Construction and History of Notre-Dame de Paris\nwith Russell Kelley\, author of The Making of Paris\n(in English)\nIn partnership with the Alliance Française Miami Metro\, the Alliance Française de Chicago\, and the Friends of Notre-Dame de Paris\nThis event begins at 10am PT / 11am MT / 12pm CT / 1pm ET and will be IN ENGLISH \nThis illustrated lecture will explore the long and eventful history of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris\, from its foundation in 1163 to the devastating fire on April 15\, 2019\, which destroyed its attic\, roof\, and iconic spire. \nThe story of Notre-Dame de Paris begins in 1163\, when Bishop Sully laid the first stone on the Île de la Cité\, at the heart of medieval Paris. One of the earliest Gothic cathedrals\, it took 182 years to complete. Over the centuries\, this architectural marvel hosted defining moments in French history\, including the coronation of a young King Henry VI of England\, the marriage of the future Henri IV and Marguerite de Valois\, and the crowning of Napoléon I as Emperor. \nAfter falling into neglect during the Revolution\, Notre-Dame was restored by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc\, who added the iconic spire that tragically burned in 2019. \n\n\n\nRussell Kelley is Vice President of the Alliance Française Miami Metro and the author of The Making of Paris: The Story of How Paris Evolved from a Fishing Village into the World’s Most Beautiful City (Lyons Press\, 2021) and Walking Through the Ages of Paris – Ten Historical Walking Tours Through the City of Light (Lyons Press\, to be published in 2026). He has lived in Paris for over 30 years – and next to Notre-Dame for the past 20 years – and attended the first mass celebrated in the rebuilt cathedral on December 8\, 2024. \nPlease register for this event at afusa.org

SUMMARY:Notre Dame de Paris - After the Fire: La Restauration de Notre-Dame de Paris (in French)
DESCRIPTION:Part 2 of a 3 part series \nNotre-Dame – After the Fire: La Restauration de Notre-Dame de Paris\nwith Philippe Villeneuve\, Chief Architect of Historical Monuments and Lead Architect for Notre-Dame Cathedral\n(in French with English or French captions)\nIn partnership with the Alliance Française Miami Metro\, the Alliance Française de Chicago\, and the Friends of Notre-Dame de Paris\nThis event begins at 10am PT / 11am MT / 12pm CT / 1pm ET and will be EN FRANÇAIS. \nThis lecture will provide a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most significant architectural restoration projects of our time\, describing the painstaking process behind the meticulous rebuilding and restoration of the cathedral\, from the careful documentation of architectural elements to the revival of centuries-old craftsmanship techniques. \nThanks to global donations and the work of dedicated craftsmen\, the extensive fire damage was repaired in record time\, and the rebuilt cathedral reopened almost exactly one year ago\, ready to reclaim its place as a symbol of Paris and French heritage. \nBut wait: There is still more work to be done. SUMMARY:Madagascar: Past and Present
DESCRIPTION:Madagascar: Past and Present\nAfter a brief overview of the history of human settlement in Madagascar\, this talk will focus on the past century.  During this period\, Madagascar was a colony of France\, regained its independence in 1960\, and today faces many challenges.  I will single out environmental issues\, the role of the colonial administration in shaping the current narrative\, and my long-term partnership with Malagasy colleagues and a community in the southwest to conserve the surrounding forests and wildlife while also improving local livelihoods and wellbeing. \nAlison Richard is a Senior Research Scientist in the Yale Anthropology Department and Franklin Muzzy Crosby Professor Emerita of the Human Environment\, and was Provost of Yale University from 1994-2002. She has studied the ecology and social behavior of wild primates in Africa\, Central America\, and the Himalayan foothills\, but she is most widely known for her research on lemurs in Madagascar. Her most recent book\, The Sloth Lemur’s Song: Madagascar from the Deep Past to the Uncertain Present\, is a far-reaching account of Madagascar past and present. For fifty years\, she has worked to help conserve the island’s unique natural heritage and enhance socio-economic opportunities for people living in and around forests in the southwest. \nRichard served as Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge from 2003-2010. During her tenure\, she led several major changes in University policy\, reorganized management of the University’s endowment\, expanded Cambridge’s global partnerships\, and launched and completed a transformational fund-raising campaign. For her accomplishments\, she was awarded a DBE (Dame Commander of the British Empire) for her services to Higher Education. \nRichard is a trustee of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Liz Claiborne & Art Ortenberg Foundation. She chairs the Leadership Council of the Yale Peabody Museum\, and serves on the Advisory Board of the Yale Institute for Biospheric Studies. Richard received her undergraduate degree in Anthropology at the University of Cambridge\, and her doctorate from London University. \nProgram Date:  Saturday\, December 13\, 2025\nTime: 3 PM\nAtlantic Works Conference Center\n57 Charter Oak Ave\nHartford\, CT\nALL GOLD MEMBERS AND AFH MEMBERS ARE FREE.\nPlease let us know below that you are planning to attend.
