SUMMARY:Cabane
DESCRIPTION:Cabane\nAbel Quentin  \nPLACE: Heirloom Market\n263 Main Street\nWethersfield\, CY \nMay 9\, 2026.\n12:30 – 1:30 \n  \nBerkeley\, 1973. \n

SUMMARY:Annual Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Annual Celebration\nSilent Presence: The French in New England\nSunday\, May 17\, 2026\n3:00 – 5:00 \nAtlantic Works Conference Center\n57 Charter Oak Ave.\nHartford\, CT  06106 \n  \n \n  \n  \nVenez nombreux à notre Célébration Annuelle de l’Alliance Française de Hartford. \nCome learn about the history and diaspora of French Canadians and Acadians.  Jeanne Douillard will be our guest of honor at the Alliance Française Annual Celebration on Sunday\, May 17 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM.   The title of her lecture will be “Silent Presence: The French in New England.”   She will include music as part of her presentation. \nFor more than 25 years\, Jeanne Douillard has probed the history of the French in the Americas. An independent scholar\, she began by researching her own family genealogy and discovered she had Québecois\, Acadiens\, Algonquin and English roots.  She wanted to find out more about these people. Her passion led her to delve deeply into the quagmire of conflicting historiographies.  English\, French and American historians of the past offered up irreconcilable views of La Nouvelle France [New France] and its people.  She was intrigued. What is the truth and why have the French in particular been such a silent presence in New England? \nShe published her book\, I Remember: Je Me Souviens… in 2015 and began giving presentations throughout New England. Entitled Silent Presence – The French in New England\, she shares her personal story intertwined with the historical story of the Québecois and Acadiens in the Americas.  It is a compelling tale of generational trauma; however\, she provides a very hopeful outcome.  In her talk she says: “As Jennifer Lee\, a Native American storyteller says: ‘To know what happened can empower and inform you.’ Madame Douillard concurs. \nOur president will introduce the members of the AF Board of Directors.  After the lecture\, there will be a light dinner and French-Canadian themed desserts.  Feel free to bring wine. \n

SUMMARY:The Paris Effect: Its Power to Inspire and Seduce
DESCRIPTION:The Paris Effect: Its Power to Inspire and Seduce\n  \n\n\nEvent begins at 1pm PT / 2pm MT / 3pm CT / 4pm ET\nWhat is it about Paris—and French culture—that so powerfully moves and inspires people around the world? \nIn this engaging talk\, journalist and longtime Paris resident Elaine Sciolino explores the answer in one compelling word: seduction. She reflects on the emotional pull of France and invites us to consider how a simple street\, the source of a river\, or the hush of a museum can awaken curiosity\, imagination\, and connection. What makes Paris more than a destination? Why does French culture continue to captivate across generations and borders? \nElaine Sciolino\, best-selling author of six books\, including La Seduction\, The Only Street in Paris\, The Seine and most recently Adventures in the Louvre\, is a contributing writer and former Paris bureau chief for The New York Times\, based in Paris. In 2010 she was decorated chevalier of the Legion of Honor\, the highest honor of the French state\, for her “special contribution” to the friendship between France and the United States. \nFor AATF members: the AATF office will send certificates of attendance to members who request the certificate and provide a screenshot. Please email: staff@frenchteachers.org. \n\n\n\nRSVP by May 21 2026 4:45pm\nRegister Here\,

DESCRIPTION:Event begins at 1pm PT / 2pm MT (except Phoenix) / 3pm CT / 4pm ET\n  \nThe Paris bistro is at its heart an unpretentious neighborhood gathering place serving traditional cuisine\, having an active bar counter\, and open beyond meal hours\, with an ever-watchful owner on the premises. Yet use of the term has also evolved over the past 150 years. In this illustrated 1-hour lecture\, Gary Lee Kraut examines the development and evolution of bistros in Paris since the late 19th century and tells of the place of old-fashion restaurant-bar bistros in the French capital today. Gary will also talk about various organizations devoted to defending and promoting traditional bistros\, cafés and brasseries as essential vectors of sociability and art-de-vivre à la française. \nOriginally from Trenton\, New Jersey\, Gary Lee Kraut is an American and French dual citizen who has been inspiring and informing travelers for 35 years through travel writing\, consulting\, lecturing\, and guiding. He is the author of five travel guides and of hundreds of articles about France. He is also the author and voice behind four audio tours created for the VoiceMap app. Since 2009 he has operated the award-winning travel e-magazine France Revisited\, francerevisited.com. He lives in Paris. \nAt home in both French and American journalism circles\, Gary served as Secretary General of the Association des Journalistes du Patrimoine\, France’s Heritage Journalists Association\, from 2016 to 2020. \nAs a lecturer\, Gary has presented extensively in the United States. Speaking at libraries\, universities\, and to Alliance Française groups\, among others\, he has made presentations as diverse as Understanding Patrimoine (Cultural Heritage) in France; American War Memories in France (WWI and WWII); the History of the Wines of Burgundy and Champagne; the Jewish History of Paris; Exploring Historic Gardens in Paris; Culinary Explorations in Paris; 3 Villas on the Riviera\, and most recently Paris Bistro Life. He is available for any of these presentations via Zoom or\, under certain circumstances\, in person. \n\n\n\nPlease visit the site afusa.org to register for this event.

SUMMARY:Liberty Equality Fashion: The Women Who Styled the French Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Event begins at 1pm PT / 2pm MT (except Phoenix) / 3pm CT / 4pm ET\nJoin us for a discussion with Anne Higonnet\, author of Liberty\, Equality\, Fashion. \nLiberty\, Equality\, Fashion is about three revolutionary women who turned themselves into style celebrities. Joséphine Bonaparte\, future Empress of France\, Térézia Tallien\, declared the most beautiful woman in Europe\, and Juliette Récamier\, icon of artists and writers\, had nothing left to lose. They had emerged in 1794 from the worst violence of the French Revolution\, just barely. Joséphine and Térézia had been incarcerated and threatened every day with death by guillotine; Juliette had been married to her father and condemned to perpetual virginity. The three survivors reacted by overthrowing centuries of royal dress codes. They tossed away corsets\, petticoats\, brocades\, baubles and coiffure towers to introduce light\, mobile dresses\, cropped hair\, and the handbag. \nFascination alternated with shock as Joséphine\, Térézia\, and Juliette boldly took control over their sexuality. Paris succumbed. News spread. All of a sudden\, Europe could see the female body\, and see it move. The French Revolution had defeated monarchy to usher in universal human rights and elected government. No one had imagined it would also include a total change of clothes\, let alone one which would express liberty for all women. \nAnne Higonnet is the Barbara Novak Professor of Art History at Barnard College\, Columbia University. She received her BA from Harvard College in 1980 and her PhD from Yale University in 1988.  She has published\, most recently\, the widely reviewed Liberty\, Equality\, Fashion; the Women who Styled the French Revolution\, as well as pieces in Vogue\, Town & Country\, Brooklyn Rail\, and the Wall Street Journal. She has written five other books as well as many essays\, and directed two book-scale digital projects. Her research has been supported by Getty\, Guggenheim\, Social Science Research Council\, and Harvard-Radcliffe Institute fellowships\, as well as by grants from the Mellon\, Howard and Kress Foundations. She a prize-winning teacher of popular lecture courses. A hybrid version of her Clothing course has been offered in partnership with National Education Opportunity Network to public high schools across the nation since 2024. \nLiberty\, Equality\, Fashion; the Women Who Styled the French Revolution is available through Amazon and as an audiobook. \nFor AATF members: the AATF office will send certificates of attendance to members who request the certificate and provide a screenshot. Please email: staff@frenchteachers.org. \nPlease visit the site afusa.org to register for this event.
