Seven Great French Explorers (and One Translator) who Opened New Worlds
ZOOM TALK
Saturday, March 21, 2026.
1:00 PM

Just in time for the first day of spring, we will learn about great French explorers and one famous French translator who changed the direction of the world. David Kamen, a retired UN translator of French and Mandarin Chinese, and a lifelong lover of history, science and languages, will present to us on a topic of great interest to him.
An illustrated account of seven French explorers from the “Golden Age” of French exploration in the New World, as well as one early linguistic scholar, Champollion, who opened the world of ancient Egypt for our age. The consistent emphasis on practical and theoretical scientific research that characterized French endeavors in this regard contrasts (sometimes sharply) with the more openly mercenary approach taken by other European powers in their colonial expansion.
A zoom link will be sent a few days before the presentation.
