French 106
Tuesday, December 1, 2026 – February 16, 2027.
5:45 – 7:45
In Person
Instructor: Sylvie Hau
A 10-week course (in-person) every Tuesday from 5:45 pm to 7:45 pm
From Tuesday, December 1st, 2026 to Tuesday, February 16th, 2027
This course is designed for students who have successfully completed French 105 or who possess
an equivalent low-intermediate level of proficiency and who are continuing their French studies at
this level. Because French 106 relies heavily on guided interaction, speaking practice, and
collaborative learning, it is important that participants have comparable levels of proficiency.
Students who already communicate with ease or near fluency in French are encouraged to enroll
in a more advanced course so that all participants can benefit from an appropriately paced and
supportive learning environment. Students enrolling in this course should already be comfortable
with the following: present tense; passé composé combined with imparfait; partitive articles (du, de
la, de l’, des); affirmative and negative forms; prepositions à, en, de; irregular verbs, difference
between Connaître and Savoir; direct-object pronouns (DOP) and indirect-object pronouns (IOP); Y
and En pronouns and their strict order in a sentence; stress pronouns; relative clauses with Qui and
Que; reflexive verbs and reflexive pronouns.
Building on this foundation, French 106 helps students develop greater confidence and fluency by
introducing more advanced grammar and increasingly nuanced ways of expressing ideas in French.
Students will learn to use adverbs; participe-présent; verbs followed by infinitive, and the following
tenses: futur; conditional and present subjunctive.
Pronunciation practice, memory-building techniques, authentic cultural materials, and interactive
communication activities are integrated throughout the course to help students improve accuracy,
confidence, and their command of spoken French.
