 A history of France highlighting the glorious decadence of the Napoléanic Second Empire including the brilliant reeingeering of Paris and the industrial changes of the French landscape.  Emphasis will be given to the enduring importance of 19th century art, architecture, and literature. Intended for intermediate students, the course combines a fascinating brief synopsis of important historical moments along with short literary or culturally pertinent reading, and a sprinkling of complementary grammar points and exercises.
