French 104
5:45 – 7:45
Wednesdays
September 9 – November 11, 2026.
10 week session
Instructor: Sylvie Hau
This course is designed for students who have successfully completed French 103 or who possess an equivalent continuing beginner to low-intermediate level of proficiency and who are continuing their French studies at this level. Because French 104 relies heavily on guided interaction, speaking practice, and collaborative learning, it is important that participants have comparable levels of proficiency.
Students who already communicate with ease or near fluency in French are encouraged to enroll in a more advanced course so that all participants can benefit from an appropriately paced and supportive learning environment. Students enrolling in this course should already be familiar with the following foundational concepts: grammatical gender; singular and plural forms; present tense; passé composé with avoir and être; possessive adjectives; definite, indefinite, and partitive articles; idiomatic expressions such as il y a and il n’y a pas; forming questions; affirmative and negative sentence structures; common expressions with the verb faire; frequently used high-frequency verbs; French accents and basic spelling conventions.
Building on this foundation, French 104 reinforces and expands students’ communication skills while introducing new aspects of the French language and Francophone cultures. The course places a strong emphasis on grammar, sentence structure, and the development of practical vocabulary. Pronunciation practice and memory-building techniques are integrated throughout the course to help students gain confidence and improve fluency.
