This course is designed for students who have successfully completed French 104 or who possess an equivalent low-intermediate level of proficiency and who are continuing their French studies at this level. Because French 105 relies heavily on guided interaction, speaking practice, and collaborative learning, it is important that participants have comparable levels of proficiency.
Students who already communicate with ease or near fluency in French are encouraged to enroll in a more advanced course so that all participants can benefit from an appropriately paced and supportive learning environment. Students enrolling in this course should already be comfortable with the following concepts: present tense; passé composé with avoir and être;agreement of past participles with direct-object pronouns; direct- and indirect-object pronouns; imperative forms with object pronouns; relative pronouns (qui and que); expressions of necessity and obligation; common irregular verbs; sequencing words and adverbs; reflexive verbs; and the distinction between the passé composé and the imparfait.
Building on this foundation, French 105 helps students develop greater confidence and fluency by introducing more advanced grammar and increasingly nuanced ways of expressing ideas in French. Students will strengthen their command of past narration by learning when and how to combine the imparfait, the passé composé, and the plus-que-parfait. The course also introduces the pronouns y and en, explores the many uses of reflexive verbs, including infinitive constructions, idiomatic expressions, and reciprocal actions. The course also expands students’ grammatical repertoire through infinitive constructions, adverbs of manner, ordinal numbers, and additional high-frequency verbs such as ouvrir. Pronunciation practice, memory-building techniques, authentic cultural materials, and interactive communication activities are integrated throughout the course to help students improve accuracy, confidence, and their command of spoken French.
