Karen Humphreys from Trinity College
Presentation in French
“Disappearing Women: A Mysterious Tale of Poison, Romance and Novels”

On Saturday, January 28, 2023 at 3 PM, Karen Humphreys, professor at Trinity College, will speak about
a woman novelist who was all but forgotten. This presentation will be in French.

Many readers are hard-pressed to recall the names and work of women who wrote in 19th-century
France. George Sand comes to mind, but there were many who were well-known in their lifetimes who
have not survived the test of time. One novelist in particular merits the attention of readers and
scholars today. Céline Bidard de la Noë, better known as Mme Emile Lévy, wrote under the nom de
plume, Paria Korigan. She was an educated woman with intellectual and creative interests whose ideas
about the roles and responsibilities of women in society changed profoundly as she matured. As a gifted
bard of her native Brittany, she published short of a dozen novels that feature outliers and marginal
figures, passion, whether it springs from desperation, rage, or love and simply, storytelling. Please join
us in solving a literary mystery drawing from archival research, sparse biographical information, and her
vibrant fiction.

Gold members and all current students are free.  Please let us know if you are attending.

Refreshments will be served.
